Final clearance can take as long as a month, so we ask for your patience and professionalism as you wait during this process of approval. It is best to submit a complete packet when applying for student health clearance. Our clearance process follows both federal and hospital guidelines, so campus partners assist in checking records and give approval for clearance. In order to shadow, you must be compliant with immunization requirements and complete the HPA Online Shadowing Training Program. One of the requirements of the volunteer program is that this program is volunteer only, and not shadowing. But DO NOT ask a physician that you meet or have met while volunteering in Duke Hospital’s Volunteer Program. Ask professors who are also clinicians, reach out to research mentors who are physicians or who know practicing clinicians, ask other students or staff. ![]() We encourage you to begin immediately exploring your options to find experiences and connecting with clinicians. Please read the instructions carefully and ensure that you follow the steps of the application process mentioned in Sections A-HPA Shadowing Training, B-Student Health Immunization Requirements and Duke University Hospital’s Approval, and C- Identifying an Experience. The information is provided to list the process involved for Duke undergraduates students in Trinity and Pratt to participate in shadowing at Duke University Hospital. DUKE UNDERGRADUATE SHADOWING approval/CLEARANCE PROCESS This shadowing clearance is only valid at Duke and is not transferable. You are required to complete the entire training and clearance process for each period in which shadowing takes place. Once you are cleared, you will be allowed to shadow until the following September 30, or graduation, whichever comes first. Application period for shadowing opens each year on October 1 stand closes on July 31st. The Office of Health Professions Advising at Duke provides training and shadowing clearance for current Duke undergraduates (sophomores through seniors who are in good academic standing) who wish to shadow within the Duke University Healthcare System (DUHS). For more information on shadowing, volunteering with patients and gaining clinical experience, see the webpage on Finding Experience. Shadowing several times and in several different specialties can provide a realistic view of medicine, an understanding of the many ways one can participate in health care, and the skills and capabilities that are needed in a profession. ![]() We encourage all Prehealth students to shadow clinicians in their prospective fields of interests. Shadowing or clinical observation is a critical component in preparing for a health career. 2023-2024 SHADOWING OVERVIEW FOR dUKE UNDERGRADUATES IN TRINITY AND PRATT Accepting applications July 31, 2024

![]() The coccal cells form loose masses of variable size and irregular in shape like bunches of grapes (H) in Staphylococcus (S. So, by adapting their shapes, bacteria often have advantages over other bacteria. In Streptococcus sp. Bacteria always face harsh and new environments and conditions and only survive if they have the right tools or means. Here, we looked at the different shapes that bacteria have and how these help them survive. This for example helps pathogens swim through the mucus of our stomach and guts and colonise us and make us sick. Spiral bacteria use a fascinating helical movement to screw through gel-like or viscous fluids. This keeps them at their preferred location and protects them from being flushed away. Here, their shapes help them align with the flow of water or our gut content while they stay attached to a surface or the gut wall. Curved bacteria grow in watery environments but also in our guts. Lastly, both curved and helical bacteria use their shapes to get better around their environments. Another advantage of these multicellular organisms is that they allow more cells to attach to surfaces and colonise hosts. These stronger and larger structures protect bacteria from being eaten by other organisms. Many rod-shaped bacteria also form longer filamentous organisms. This helps them colonise different locations and resist dangerous environments. Bacterial cell shapes help face harsh environmentsĪlso, straight rod cells can pack into biofilms more efficiently and build organised structures. This allows them to swim to new places in cases of danger or the lack of nutrients. And thanks to their shapes, they are efficient swimmers. On the other hand, rod-shaped bacteria often have flagella. This helps cocci to grow in locations where there are little amounts of nutrients. So they don’t actually need that many nutrients. All this while their cell volume is relatively small. This means they have a large envelope surface through which they can take up a lot of nutrients. Often, the cell shape gives a bacterium advantages over other bacteria and it is easier for them to settle down and face harsh environments.įor example, spherical cells have the lowest surface-to-volume ratio. Now that we have seen the different shapes of bacteria, you might ask yourself, why do bacteria have these different shapes? How do they help them?Īs always in biology, it comes down to how a property helps a bacterium survive in a certain location. These push and grow to the outside giving these bacteria a shiny star shape. The star shape comes from six little arms that extend out of the bacterial cell. This is why the peptidoglycan layer is pretty rigid and stiff and has a specific shape in each bacterium. This peptidoglycan layer is made of sugars that are linked together by very strong bonds. These keep the cellular machines and internal parts together so that a bacterium can function within this envelope.Īnd this envelope also gives bacteria their shape.īoth Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria have a layer of so-called peptidoglycan within their envelope. To protect themselves from the environment, bacteria as well as all other organisms have cell envelopes. So, what is it about bacterial shapes? Why do bacteria look differently? And how do the different shapes of bacteria help them survive and thrive? What gives bacteria their shapes? Yet, some of these bacterial superpowers are indeed influenced by their cell shapes. Even though bacteria looked similar, they had different superpowers. It came only with later, modern technologies that scientists learned that there was more to bacteria than their shapes. So, they talked of cocci and bacilli based on the spheres and rods that they saw under the microscope.Īnd they classified microbes and bacteria based on these shapes. They could only describe the shapes of these tiny organisms. ![]() When scientists first used microscopes to look at microorganisms and bacteria, they did not know what they were seeing. ![]() Calculate Work HoursĮmployers only pay for working hours. Nicolas Cage stated that he was "done" with the Ghost Rider films and a planned sequel was cancelled. The film grossed more than $132 million, against its $57–75 million production budget. The film experienced worse critical reception than the first film, with criticism being aimed towards the script, CGI, and acting. He is approached by a Monk named Moreau who tells him that he can help him be free of the Rider, but first, he needs Johnny's help to protect a boy, whom Roarke has plans for, to help him take human form. Johnny Blaze, a man who made a deal with the demon lord who called himself Mephisto at the time (now Roarke), is on the run trying to make sure no-one is harmed by his alter ego, the Ghost Rider. Released publicly for one night on December 11, 2011, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance had its wide commercial release on February 17, 2012, in 2D and 3D. The film was directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, from a screenplay written by Scott M. It is a standalone sequel to the 2007 film Ghost Rider and features Nicolas Cage reprising his role as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider with supporting roles portrayed by Ciarán Hinds, Violante Placido, Johnny Whitworth, Christopher Lambert, and Idris Elba. The extras include deleted scenes, a full-length director’s commentary, and an extended making-of documentary for those who just can’t get enough of Ghost Rider.Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a 2011 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics antihero Ghost Rider. And if you can overlook the obnoxious score (or like your action cues with a giant helping of heavy metal), the audio mix was appropriately vivid, spacious, and generous with its active surrounds and deep bass. And while I preferred the movie in 2D, the 3D was effective without being overly gimmicky or distracting. The crisp, clean video transfer could hardly be bettered. But hell (or-inside joke alert-Mars) is not a happy meal.Īt least the movie looks and sounds great. And Ciarán Hinds as the devil looks constantly grumpy and uncomfortable as he ponders how his fortunes have changed since Rome. Idris Elba, who has been busy since we first noticed him in Thor, does the best he can to earn his pay. A scene in which he fights off turning into Ghost Rider is almost worth the price of rental. Nicolas Cage gobbles up more scenery than a giant termite in an exterminator commercial. The actors do their best to keep things at least modestly interesting. The movie is little more than a succession of action scenes strung together by a thin plot, running a mercifully short 95 minutes (although it seemed much longer). But first he has to fight off a nasty band of kidnappers, including their rotter of a leader, who ends up as a zombie with power over darkness and decay. When a rogue priest promises to free Johnny from the spell if he saves the boy from Lucifer’s clutches, he takes up the challenge. Johnny’s pursuit of evil soon puts him at odds with his old helpmate Satan, who has spawned a son to take over the family business. His motorcycle has apparently sold its carburetor and tires to Beelzebub as well, since whenever Johnny goes all flames and stuff, he’s also treated to one hell of a ride. A bummer for sure, but everybody needs a hobby. In exchange, he periodically turns into an ancient, fiery demon that searches out evil to suck out its soul. From what I can gather from the character’s two films, 2007’s Ghost Rider and this sequel (I’m not a fan of the comics), Johnny Blaze is a motorcycle stunt rider who sells his soul to the devil to save his father’s life. As Marvel’s comic characters go, Ghost Rider is hellishly hard to categorize. In addition, there are many well-known trails in the Central Park area that are well-suited for both small-scale hiking and jogging. In the vicinity of the center of the central park you will find Pirkkola sports park, where it is possible to practice many sports. Two new protected areas are also coming to the area: the Haltiala grove and the Paloheinä raven. ![]() In addition, there is a protected Maunula walnut grove in Maunula. Numerous conservation areas can be found in the northern parts of the park, which are, Pitkäkoski slope grove, Haltiala treasure area, Niskala tree species park, Ruutinkoski rantalehto and Vantaanjoki rapids. The nature of the area is varied, and within the Central Park you will find, for example, hexagonal forests, groves, dry meadows and fields. Töölönlahti and its surroundings were also included in this plan, but officially Keskuspuisto starts in the Valley and continues from there to the Vantaa border and the Vantaanjoki River.Ĭentral Park is now a very popular outdoor destination, which also serves as a peaceful commute for those who like to travel with bicycly. The central park was born on the basis of plans made by architect Bertel Jung in 1911. Helsinki Central Park is a green area about ten kilometers long, running south – north from the center of Helsinki all the way to Haltiala and the Vantaanjoki river. In the middle of the park is a statue of the national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804–1877), sculpted by sculptor Walter Runeberg (1838–1920), which was once Helsinki’s first public monument. Another of the statues is known as “Hei mutta” and in this work the little boy is depicted playing with a fish. ![]() The first of these is called “Aallottaria,” which depicts two mermaids competing with fish. There are two pools of water on both sides of the stage and they are decorated with statues designed by Viktor Jansson (1886–1958). Opposite the chapel is the Espa stage, built in the 1930s, where live music is played from traditional May Day until the end of August. At the end of the park on the Market Square is, for example, one of the most legendary restaurants in Helsinki: Restaurant Kappeli, completed in 1867 and designed by architect Hampus Dahlström. The esplanade also contains many places worth visiting and seeing. The park is bordered on both sides by rows of lime trees that form an impressive hall-like space. The architecture can be seen, for example, in the form of a park that follows straight lines with both tree streets and plantations. The location of the park was once designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, the chief architect of Helsinki. The Esplanade Park is a popular place to walk, especially during the summer, and you will usually spend time in a relaxed atmosphere, for example, listening to music, watching performances or enjoying a picnic. The legendary Esplanade is probably the most famous park in Finland, and at the same time the green heart of Helsinki city center. In the East, ink and color ink historically predominated the choice of media, with equally rich and complex traditions. In Western cultures, oil painting and watercolor painting have rich and complex traditions in style and subject matter. There are examples of cave paintings all over the world-in Indonesia, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, China, India, Australia, Mexico, etc. Archaeologists have also found a fragment of rock painting preserved in a limestone rock-shelter in the Kimberley region of North-Western Australia, that is dated to 40,000 years old. In the lowest layer of material at these sites, there are used pieces of ochre estimated to be 60,000 years old. However, the earliest evidence of the act of painting has been discovered in two rock-shelters in Arnhem Land, in northern Australia. More recently, in 2021, cave art of a pig found in an Indonesian island, and dated to over 45,500 years, has been reported. The finding was noted to be "the oldest pictorial record of storytelling and the earliest figurative artwork in the world". In December 2019, figurative cave paintings depicting pig hunting in the Maros-Pangkep karst in Sulawesi were estimated to be even older, at at least 43,900 years old. In November 2018, however, scientists reported the discovery of the then-oldest known figurative art painting, over 40,000 (perhaps as old as 52,000) years old, of an unknown animal, in the cave of Lubang Jeriji Saléh on the Indonesian island of Borneo ( Kalimantan). The oldest known paintings are approximately 40,000 years old, found in both the Franco-Cantabrian region in western Europe, and in the caves in the district of Maros ( Sulawesi, Indonesia). It was painted 40,000–52,000 years ago or earlier. The support for paintings includes such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, pottery, leaf, copper and concrete, and the painting may incorporate multiple other materials, including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, and even whole objects. In art, the term "painting" describes both the act and the result of the action (the final work is called "a painting").
